Our Gallaudet University Credo states, "We believe that every person should be treated with civility and that our community is strengthened by the broad diversity of its members. Therefore, we will promote and applaud behaviors that support the dignity of individuals and groups and are respectful of others' opinions. We will especially discourage behaviors and attitudes that disrespect the diversity of individuals and groups for any reason including religion, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, hearing status, or language and communication preference." In 2016, with substantial support from the student body and faculty, Gallaudet University's Transgender Task Force asked the University's Board of Trustees to amend the Credo to include "gender identity and expression."

Our Synopsis
Gallaudet University's LGBTQA Resource Center, a unit of the Office of Diversity and Equity for Students, serves as a hub for gender and sexuality-related programs, services, training, activities, and student groups on campus. The LGBTQA Resource Center is a visible space to facilitate understanding of diversity of gender identity and sexual orientation year-round, with particular activity during Pride Month, Coming Out Day, Transgender Awareness Week, and Commencement Week. LGBTQA Resource Center programs and services include advocacy initiatives, discussion and support groups, student meet-ups, awareness trainings and workshops, consultation to campus departments, collaborative programming and outreach, research support, and support for students, staff, and faculty. The LGBTQA Resource Center offers books and reference materials on gender and sexuality that are housed in the ODES Diversity Library. The Center maintains an active presence on social media and disseminates a monthly newsletter with information on events, programs, and resources of interest to the LGBTQA+ campus community. The LGBTQA Resource Center is member of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals, and works closely with Rainbow Society, Gallaudet's LGBTQA student organization.

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.
The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
