Commitment to LGBTQ Issues
Our Synopsis
The Resource Center holds an LGBTQ Support Group every semester in which you can feel safe as an LGBTQ student to discuss what’s going on in your life. This is a group for you to receive and give support, learn about other people’s experiences, and be in a safe place for exploration. The Resource Center also holds Ally Trainings every semester to help educate students. Through training participants learn how to use inclusive language, identify societal prejudices and the importance of being an outspoken ally to the LGBTQ Community. “Pride Kamp” is an annual one day conference held as a welcoming, teaching, and leadership development for LGBT and Ally students. Pride Kamp allows students to connect with others, discuss issues important to the LGBT and Ally community, foster a connection between students and educators, and be aware of the resources available to them. The mission of this conference is to ensure that students know they have opportunity and support on campus from the moment they begin their education. The LGBTQ Resource Center also hosts an annual Lavender Graduation Reception. This is a special graduation ceremony that honors the achievements of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students at the College of Staten Island.

Why you'll love College of Staten Island/CUNY
"At my college I feel the LGBT friendliness. I see it in the halls, in the air, in the classrooms. But most of all I see humanity.
— -Bayron, 20, Gay Male, Senior
"I find that CSI is a very welcoming environment to all individuals regardless of race, skin color, sexual orientation, religion and cultural background. There is a sense of belonging and acceptance for all students, facility and staff."
— 38-year-old, bisexual male, senior
"I transferred into CSI expecting the worst Staten Island had to offer after starting Hormone Replacement Therapy. To my surprise, at least on campus, I found and continue to find genuine support. I couldn't be more thankful."
— 21-year-old, trans man.
CSI has a 100% admit rate. Nearly 50% are “low income students.” Most live with their parents. These factors are important for LGBTQ students. Most importantly, underprepared queer students can still receive a quality education. Likewise, the relatively low cost of tuition ($6100/year) enables poor queer students to attend. On the other hand, many students commute long hours from across the city, and this is a burden. Some students have difficulty individuating from their families, which can create special tensions for LGBTQ students. CSI thus has a special relationship to and responsibility for working class queer students.
— Matt Brim-Associate Professor of Queer Studies
I went to high school where being an ally of LGBT members was abnormal. Now being at CSI for a whole year not being an ally is abnormal.
— Beatrice Winston, 19-year-old, sophomore. Proud and Out lesbian female

Overall Campus Pride Index Score
The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.
The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
Note: Prospective students and families are strongly encouraged to research current state laws for any college/university you are considering. The Campus Pride Index is updated annually and only measures current campus policies, programs and practices. Find information about state laws targeting the LGBTQ+ population on the Movement Advancement Project’s Equality Maps at lgbtmap.org/equality-maps.
