Colleges and universities want LGBTQ students, faculty and staff to be out and proud as part of the diversity of the campus community. The Campus Pride Index provides campuses the opportunity to come out as LGBTQ-friendly and take responsibility for continually improving their LGBTQ campus climate.

The Campus Pride Index features LGBTQ student opportunities by highlighting the positive work within higher education across the country. Prospective students and families may choose the best LGBTQ campuses searching the tool based on area of study, cost, location, type of campus and LGBTQ-inclusive policy, programs and practice for their college search.

Commitment to LGBTQ Issues

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Resource Center is dedicated to improving the educational environment for LGBTQ students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumnae by providing a safe space for LGBTQ community members and allies at the College of Staten Island. The LGBTQ Center embraces the diversity of the CSI community and provides resources and programs for campus members It encourages a confidential support network and operates as a source of information about counseling and other resources available on campus and throughout the region for LGBTQ, allies and their families. The Center raises awareness about issues important to LGBTQ people and encourages community service by CSI students and organizations that serve LGBTQ people on campus, on Staten Island and throughout New York City. The Center organizes activities, panels and speakers on a variety of LGBTQ topics every semester. The Center offers a Safe Space and Drop-in Library consisting of magazines, books and DVDs. Our Synopsis

The Resource Center holds an LGBTQ Support Group every semester in which you can feel safe as an LGBTQ student to discuss what’s going on in your life. This is a group for you to receive and give support, learn about other people’s experiences, and be in a safe place for exploration. The Resource Center also holds Ally Trainings every semester to help educate students. Through training participants learn how to use inclusive language, identify societal prejudices and the importance of being an outspoken ally to the LGBTQ Community. “Pride Kamp” is an annual one day conference held as a welcoming, teaching, and leadership development for LGBT and Ally students. Pride Kamp allows students to connect with others, discuss issues important to the LGBT and Ally community, foster a connection between students and educators, and be aware of the resources available to them. The mission of this conference is to ensure that students know they have opportunity and support on campus from the moment they begin their education. The LGBTQ Resource Center also hosts an annual Lavender Graduation Reception. This is a special graduation ceremony that honors the achievements of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students at the College of Staten Island.

CSI has a 100% admit rate. Nearly 50% are “low income students.” Most live with their parents. These factors are important for LGBTQ students. Most importantly, underprepared queer students can still receive a quality education. Likewise, the relatively low cost of tuition ($6100/year) enables poor queer students to attend. On the other hand, many students commute long hours from across the city, and this is a burden. Some students have difficulty individuating from their families, which can create special tensions for LGBTQ students. CSI thus has a special relationship to and responsibility for working class queer students.

Overall Campus Pride Index Score

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.

The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
