The Campus Pride Index provides campuses the opportunity to come out as LGBTQ-friendly and take responsibility for continually improving their LGBTQ campus climate.

The Campus Pride Index features LGBTQ student opportunities by highlighting the positive work within higher education across the country. Prospective students and families may choose the best LGBTQ campuses searching the tool based on area of study, cost, location, type of campus and LGBTQ-inclusive policy, programs and practice for their college search.

Commitment to LGBTQ Issues

FIU is committed to building an academic community whose members represent and embrace diverse cultures, backgrounds, and life experiences that reflect the multicultural nature of South Florida and our global society. Through campus organizations and offices, and informational networks, FIU provides a range of educational and social programs, lectures, academic courses, and leadership development opportunities for students and others. FIU empowers and provides tools to students, faculty, and staff to take ownership over their experience and advocacy here. Programs that support this are human resource's Out Professional Panthers Network (OPPEN), the Center for Women and Gender Studies' certificate program in Queer Studies and the Pride Center's LGBTQA+ Mentorship Program, Pride Leaders Program, Gender Justice Fashion Show, engagement in the Miami Beach Pride Parade, advisement of numerous student advocacy groups including the Pride Student Union, collaborations with other departments, and support of informal socials. With all of this on offer, there's something for everyone seeking to get involved in the LGBTQ+ community at FIU.

Our Synopsis

The Pride Center works to create an environment of empowerment, affirmation, and inclusion for all Panthers of diverse genders and orientations through education, advocacy, and celebration. The Pride Center is supported by the Office of Social Justice and Inclusion. Through our Safe Zone Advocate Training, we offer valuable resources to educate faculty, staff, and students on diverse topics centering gender, orientation, and their intersections with other identities and experiences. Our summer Pride Leaders Program (PLP) develops student's leadership skills that they apply to improving the lives of all Panthers. We also fund students who wish to attend the LGBTQ Task Force's Creating Change Conference each year. We are committed to ensuring all students succeed at FIU and beyond. This means listening to students' needs and working alongside them to develop the policies and spaces that impact them. We provide resources, support, and opportunities that empower students to become effective self-advocates. We also work to establish a strong sense of belonging to FIU among our LGBTQIA+ students through the celebration of who they are and what they accomplish through scholarships, events like Miami Beach Pride, special Lavender Graduation ceremonies.

Overall Campus Pride Index Score

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.

The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
