Why you'll love Washington University in St. Louis

“WashU’s support for LGBTQIA* students, especially from campus life staff, is exceptional. Rarely are there instances where inclusivity of queer students isn’t considered. In addition, I have found that leadership opportunities for LGBTQIA* students are plentiful. I have always felt, throughout my time at WashU, that there are people who care deeply about me.”

— undergraduate student, class of 2016

Thankfully, there is a small community of passionate LGBTQ students who are highly involved in academics, leadership, civic engagement, and community building. These students and supportive staff members have successfully fought for more LGBTQ-inclusive policies and community standards, and continue to push the university when queer students are excluded.

— undergraduate student, class of 2017

Pride at WashU is really unique because LGBT+ life here exists, in my experience, at two different levels. At the first: there is so much general acceptance on campus of LGBT+ identities that many students don’t feel a need to be deeply involved in a Pride Community. At the second: there is a great community of queer activists who come together and rally behind discussion of and advocacy for LGBT+ students, especially those at the intersections of other marginalized or academically underrepresented identities.

Overall Campus Pride Index Score

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.

The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life  and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.

Note: Prospective students and families are strongly encouraged to research current state laws for any college/university you are considering. The Campus Pride Index is updated annually and only measures current campus policies, programs and practices. Find information about state laws targeting the LGBTQ+ population on the Movement Advancement Project’s Equality Maps at lgbtmap.org/equality-maps.
