LGBTQ+ Pride Farmington is long respected for its LGBTQ+ Pride. Here, you can really be yourself. Or you can get a fresh new start and become whomever you want to be. And who you are is awesome. The University of Maine at Farmington, and the greater Farmington area, is a safe, welcoming community that admires and respects people for who they are and who they were always meant to be. Here, the LGBTQ+ community is not some separate, isolated group. We’re part of the UMF fabric. Always have been. Always will be. We’re woven into the very tapestry of the institution: across all academic programs; in every club and organization; we’re in our athletics, sports and recreation programs; in student government and numerous student leadership positions. We’re also in many academic departments (faculty and staff) and administrative departments (staff) across campus. Here, it’s just not a big deal. It is … but it isn’t. If that makes sense. Back before you were born, in the late 80’s / early 90’s, UMF pioneered one of the very first LGBTQ+ student organizations in northern New England. Our President was one of the first openly gay college presidents in all of New England. We strongly supported the EqualityME organization and participated in the annual Portland (and later, Bangor) Pride Parades — all of this way before it was cool to do so.

Why you'll love University of Maine at Farmington
“I live on campus and I like that UMF has special on-campus housing for LGBTQ+ students if they want to choose it. It’s not a separate segregated thing though, it’s a part of a regular residence hall where there are additional support things for Queer students.” — Sam LaFond Secondary Education – English major UMF Admissions Ambassador Kennebunk, Maine — Sam LaFond Secondary Education – English major UMF Admissions Ambassador Kennebunk, Maine

“This summer, my girlfriend and I celebrate our 4th anniversary and enter our senior year of college. In our time here, we’ve lived a freer and more joyful life than I could have ever pictured as a scared eighteen-year-old filling out college applications. We’ve held hands on the quad, attended Pride events in the courtyard of our dorm, formed a friend group comprised entirely of Queer students that share our experience. ust this morning, I recognized a handful of my favorite professors from our newly-minted OutList, which publicly publishes the names of out and proud LGBTQ+ faculty and staff. UMF has given me a space where I feel safe. It’s given me a space where I’m not afraid to say that I’m a lesbian, because I know I will be met with love.” — Jocelyn Royalty Double major: Creative Writing and Psychology New Haven, Conn

Overall Campus Pride Index Score
The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.
The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
Note: Prospective students and families are strongly encouraged to research current state laws for any college/university you are considering. The Campus Pride Index is updated annually and only measures current campus policies, programs and practices. Find information about state laws targeting the LGBTQ+ population on the Movement Advancement Project’s Equality Maps at lgbtmap.org/equality-maps.
