Welcome! You will feel at home, respected and accepted at Adelphi. We believe very strongly in letting you learn in an environment where you will be able to discover your true best self, whatever your gender identification, sexual orientation, background, race or religion -- it's part of our personalized approach to education. Christine M. Riordan, Ph.D., is one of a small number of female university presidents in the United States. She named Adelphi's first vice president of diversity and inclusion, Perry Greene, Ph.D. Dr. Greene has created many new programs. For instance, you can sign up for an LGBTQ mentor to help you with your studies. You can join a diversity walk. You can choose to live in a residence hall that is gender-inclusive with private all-gender restrooms with showers. You can have your preferred name on your Adelphi ID card, and join the president at a rally for transgender rights. Fifteen years ago, before many other colleges, Adelphi formed a Diversity Committee. We are proud of their progress and their spirit of openness and respect for all. Our commitment to acceptance and understanding is reflected by Adelphi's required core curriculum. These classes provide a strong foundation for social justice, so every Adelphi student learns to accept and respect differences in the classroom and outside of it.With all of our students taking these classes together, we ensure a common ground where all of our students can thrive.

LGBTQ Student Opportunities
Colleges and universities want LGBTQ students, faculty and staff to be out and proud as part of the diversity of the campus community. The Campus Pride Index provides campuses the opportunity to come out as LGBTQ-friendly and take responsibility for continually improving their LGBTQ campus climate.
The Campus Pride Index features LGBTQ student opportunities by highlighting the positive work within higher education across the country. Prospective students and families may choose the best LGBTQ campuses searching the tool based on area of study, cost, location, type of campus and LGBTQ-inclusive policy, programs and practice for their college search.

Commitment to LGBTQ Issues
Our Synopsis
There are so many ways to be part of LGBTQ life at Adelphi. You can start by joining an LGBTQ or ally group, like the Gender and Sexuality Alliance. You can update your name and your gender identity on University records and documents, so you can feel comfortable knowing your professors will know how to refer to you. Your name and gender is important to you, it’s who you are, and we respect you and how you identify. Life at Adelphi is especially welcoming to the LGBTQ community. You can live in gender-inclusive housing with roommates of any sex or gender identity you prefer. You can participate in LGBTQ-focused events, like our annual Coming Out Day celebration and parade and transgender support events. You could take courses focused on gender studies that include LGBTQ-related topics. And we have more than 40 all-gender restrooms on campus. When it comes time to find an internship, Adelphi's Career and Professional Development services can help you find one that is LGBTQ-friendly. That goes for career counseling, too. And you can graduate with recognition of your LGBTQ or ally identity at our annual Lavender Graduation ceremony. After you graduate, Adelphi is still there for you. You can become part of Adelphi’s LGBTQ alumni group, where you'll have access to career information, networking, and ways you can reach out to the next generation of Panthers. Join us!

Overall Campus Pride Index Score
The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.
The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
Note: Prospective students and families are strongly encouraged to research current state laws for any college/university you are considering. The Campus Pride Index is updated annually and only measures current campus policies, programs and practices. Find information about state laws targeting the LGBTQ+ population on the Movement Advancement Project’s Equality Maps at lgbtmap.org/equality-maps.
