At the core of the Tufts community are people of diverse backgrounds, interests, and experiences. Many Tufts students identify as LGBT, and many more are supportive of the LGBT community. On our campus of 6,800 undergraduates, it isn't unusual to see rainbow flags hanging from dormitory windows or same-sex couples holding hands. Campus is particularly welcoming to LGBT students through active organizations and student groups, such as the LGBT Center and its full-time staff, the Rainbow House, where LGBT student may choose to live and which hosts major LGBT social events, and over ten other LGBT student groups. Many LGBT students, faculty, and administrators are out and advertise their presence on campus annually on Coming Out Day. The Boston area is also known for a rich LGBT life, being the first place in the United States to legalize same-sex marriage and having some of the strongest anti-discrimination statutes in the country.

Our Synopsis
There are several LGBT organizations at Tufts, supported by the LGBT Center, which is available to anyone on campus interested in learning more about gender and sexuality, LGBT experiences, intersecting identities, peer leadership, and activism. Within the curriculum students may major or minor in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, exploring classes as diverse as "Drama 43: Gay and Lesbian Theatre & Film" or "Music 97: Queer Pop" or "History 96: Body and Sexuality in Pre-Modern Europe." Outside of the curriculum, students are involved with social groups like the Rainbow House (and its regular LGBT parties), advocacy groups and discussion/support groups. Overall Campus Pride Index Score
The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.
The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.
