Commitment to LGBTQ Issues

Antioch College confidently and joyfully champions LGBTQ people and issues. In these turbulent times when LGBTQIA rights face relentless challenges, we stand firmly committed to creating an environment where every individual–across gender identities or sexual orientations–can not only flourish but also be empowered to thrive academically, socially, and personally. Our policies, programs, and resources promote equality, equity, and justice. This builds on the progress we've made as a society. It is also our duty to live up to our values and meet the needs of our community: Over three-quarters of our students identify as LGBTQIA+, and 100% of our community is committed to inclusion and belonging. At Antioch College, we understand that now, more than ever, it's crucial to celebrate diversity and inclusivity to strengthen our community and enrich the educational experience for all. In the face of injustice, we stand in unwavering solidarity with the LGBTQ community, forging ahead with courage and determination to create a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone. We know that together, we are a force that cannot be deterred, united in our commitment to justice and equity.

Our Synopsis

Antioch College is dedicated to providing an inclusive community for LGBTQIA+ and ally students. At the core of our campus is "The Queer Center," a student-driven hub offering on-campus spaces and events for LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, staff, and passionate allies. Here, our community unites to address LGBTQ issues, forming a robust network of support and activism. We prioritize using chosen gender pronouns and names campus-wide, including their formal recognition at Commencement. Gender-free housing options and an all-gender restroom policy are available, ensuring access aligned with gender identity. Our unique campus culture boasts over 80% LGBTQIA+ student representation, fostering belonging and understanding. We celebrate diverse identities, creating an atmosphere of acceptance and celebration. Antioch College hosts various engaging events throughout the year. These include activities focused on gender identity, performance, sex positivity, healthy practices, and consent education. Overall Campus Pride Index Score

The Campus Pride Index has a strong theoretical research foundation in LGBTQ current programs, practices and policies for safer, more inclusive campus learning environments. The index tool has been tested extensively since 2001 and recently updated with new, higher LGBTQ national benchmarks in 2015.

The Campus Pride Index is a vital tool for assisting campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBTQ campus life  and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more inclusive, welcoming and respectful of LGBTQ and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBTQ-Friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. Campus Pride commends the campuses participating in the index and their willingness to come out, be visible and actively advocate for improving higher education for LGBTQ people.

Note: Prospective students and families are strongly encouraged to research current state laws for any college/university you are considering. The Campus Pride Index is updated annually and only measures current campus policies, programs and practices. Find information about state laws targeting the LGBTQ+ population on the Movement Advancement Project’s Equality Maps at lgbtmap.org/equality-maps.
